About

One of the leading violists of her generation, Hsin-Yun Huang has been a soloist with the Berlin Radio Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, Taiwan Philharmonic, and London Sinfonia, among many others, and appears regularly at festivals, including Marlboro, Rome Chamber Music, Santa Fe, Spoleto USA, and Telluride. A member of the Brentano String Quartet from 1994 to 2000, she tours extensively with the ensemble, most notably including performances of the complete Mozart string quintets at Carnegie Hall. She was a member of the Borromeo String Quartet from 1994 to 2000 and is a founding member of the Variation String Trio with violinist Jennifer Koh and cellist Wilhelmina Smith. Recent career highlights include the complete Hindemith viola concertos with the Taiwan Philharmonic and Taipei City. Her 2012 recording Viola Viola includes works she commissioned from Steven Mackey, Shi-Hui Chen, and Poul Ruders. A native of Taiwan, Huang was gold medalist in the 1988 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition. She received her degrees from Juilliard and the Curtis Institute of Music and serves on the faculty at Curtis. She also studied at the Menuhin school in England.
